Black Country Route Industrial Shrines "Gloryhole"
Black Country Route Industrial Shrines "Gloryhole"
1992

The basis of the structure relates to the figure in sacred geometry known as the vesica pisces which is often the compositional device used when depicting the holy birth or re-birth. It is a graphic metaphor for an opening, passage or route to and from a higher state.

This work would incorporate windows or pigeon holes to work against the light produced by cutting and bending circular steel tabs from sheet steel. The “smoke” on either side of the structure is made from mangled weld-mesh. The horizontal central panel at the base includes overlapping strap-work of steel with over-stated rivets reminiscent of bridge building.
